Fair Food Spring!

April brings more than May flowers this year… It’s bringing exciting, creative Fair Food actions, too!

Like the action pictured above, protests have been busting out all over the country this spring season (for a report and a great photo gallery from the above protest, read “South Fort Myers Publix plays host to protesters,” Ft. Myers News-Press, 4/17/11).

From weekly actions in New York City and California’s Bay Area to protests in Washington, DC, Providence, RI, the Rio Grande Valley, TX, and more, Fair Food allies have been not just active, but creative in their efforts to convince Publix, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, and Quiznos to support the Campaign for Fair Food.

And from the sound of things, the message is getting across to customers witnessing the protests. From the Ft. Myers News-Press:

“… Although Jim Bachard of south Fort Myers shopped at Publix on Sunday, he hadn’t planned to buy tomatoes.

‘But I’d certainly pay workers another penny a pound,’ Bachard said. ‘I lose more than that through the hole in my pocket every day. And everyone has to make a living.'” read more

And from WBRU in Providence, RI (“Providence Fair Food Protests Supermarket Chain Stop & Shop,” WBRU, 4/10/11):

“… Melissa Solomon is a Stop & Shop customer from Providence. She said the supermarket chain could raise the cost of its tomatoes without upsetting its consumers.

‘Nobody is going to stop buying tomatoes because they raise it five cents a pound or ten cents a pound. So they might as well raise the price and let the people have more money.’” read more
