Remains of the week

Publix protests, full report from Future of Food Conference,
and more…

Things are never quiet on the Fair Food front, and sometimes the big stories can swamp the more day-to-day activities that keep the campaign moving forward.

While a national day of action focused May Day attention on Trader Joe’s with 23 protests across the country, Publix certainly didn’t escape the heat. The picture above is from a very large protest outside a Hollywood Publix, where more than 150 South Florida Fair Food activists and workers from Immokalee joined together to demand human rights for the workers who pick Publix’s tomatoes.

Earlier, a new Publix store opened in downtown Lake Worth, and the Fair Food Campaign was there, too, to inform consumers and the press about Publix’s unconscionable refusal to support ethical purchasing standards.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post Food section has put together a full, multi-media report on last week’s Future of Food conference. It was an exciting event, captured well in the Post report, that with any luck may mark a turning point in the growing movement for sustainable food.

And finally, the AFL-CIO blog weighed in on the changes taking place in the fields in Florida with a nice piece entitled “Training is Sign of Better Day in Tomato Fields.” Definitely check it out if you have a moment.
