Supermarket Week of Action, Coast to Coast

In Philadelphia, students with U Penn’s Student Labor Action Project joined community and religious leaders in a large and spirited action, which attracted the attention of the local press (which you can read here and here).

Above, Rabbis Lauren Grabelle-Herrmann and Rabbi Anna Boswell-Levy stand in front of a Fair Food Sukkah constructed on the sidewalk in front of the Trader Joe’s store to drive home the message that faith and Fair Food go hand in hand.

In Milburn, NJ, protesters greeted shoppers with “samples of justice”…

… while in Jacksonville, customers received a musical welcome from local Fair Food activists.

In Madison, WI, protesters had a “fun and awesome night” even though it was too cold to play the jaranas! The action was spearheaded by the UW MEChA chapter.

And in an inspirational gesture, participants at the 24th annual East Coast Migrant Stream forum gathered for a photo with the CIW’s Lucas Benitez to show their solidarity with the Campaign. Here’s how they describe it in an email to the CIW:

“On Saturday, October 22, promotoras, farmworker advocates, health care and social service providers, educators and policy makers gathered from across the country to attend the 24th Annual East Coast Stream Migrant Stream Forum. Invited guest, Lucas Benitez, co-director of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, served as the Guest Closing Speaker. After listening to Benitiez’s presentation, participants gathered for a group photo to show their solidarity and share in their support of the CIW’s struggle for the rights of farmworkers.”

Equally inspiring was a march organized by students at Stetson University in tiny Deland, Florida, where they marched on Publix…

… while on the other end of the urban spectrum, NYC Fair Food activists protested at a local Trader Joe’s then headed over to the heart of the Occupy Wall Street movement, where they held a standing room only public education forum on the Campaign for Fair Food!
