TACO BELL TRUTH TOUR -- DAY THREE

The knockout punch: The picking bucket pyramid, 120 buckets big, over two-stories tall, representing the inhuman effort necessary to earn $50 dollars in a day of picking two tons of tomatoes.

Pyramids, of course, have been constructed by workers for centuries, from Egypt to the great Mayan empires.

But this pyramid was unique.

This was the first pyramid built by workers for workers...

This pyramid, as Gerardo Reyes and the builders explained upon its completion, was not constructed to celebrate the powerful and their riches...

But to celebrate workers themselves, and to build the power of the poor.

The pyramid leaned precariously...

But with the efforts of many...

... including those behind the scenes...

The seemingly impossible was made possible, and a powerful new symbol was born.

The rally, ably mc'd by the Rev. Noelle Damico (above, in action), included one more symbolic blow to the fast-food giant: The Reverend Cindy Weber, pastor of Jeff Street Baptist Church at Liberty in Louisville, turned over to the CIW a check for $572...

... but this wasn't just any check. This was a check written to the church by none other than Yum Brands. But Reverend Weber, whose congregation has been boycotting Taco Bell for some time now, felt it would do more for the workers' cause. "It's hypocritical for us, as a church, to take charity from Yum Brands when they're not doing the more important work of justice," said Pastor Weber.

The sound you just heard was the resounding thud of a fast-food giant hitting the canvas. Round Two and the Battle in Louisville goes to the workers. Stay tuned for LA!!
