BIG NEWS: Actor, Comedian and Fair Food champion Amy Schumer joins May 1st Concert line up!

Amy Schumer (center, red scarf) joins farmworkers and their families for a group photo during the 2019 Boycott Wendy’s March in New York City.

PLUS: Zapoteca hip hop star Mare Advertencia Lirika and Los Altepee also join all-star line-up for May Day Concert!

Just in case you were not yet sure how to spend May Day this year, here are three more reasons to join farmworkers and the Fair Food Nation for the 2021 May 1st concert:  Amy Schumer.  Mare Advertencia Lirika.  Los Altepee.

Earlier this month, we were thrilled to announce that singer, songwriter, and political activist Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine fame) and hip-hop artist and social justice scholar Olmeca would be joining the CIW live on Facebook from 6pm-8pm on May 1st for a Virtual May Day Concert to honor the extraordinary efforts of the country’s farmworkers, who have braved unimaginable risks by continuing to work during the COVID-19 pandemic so that the rest of us can eat.  But we are not going to stop at thanking farmworkers: In true Fair Food style, we will also demand that Wendy’s, the final fast food holdout, ensure real and meaningful protections for farmworkers in their supply chain by joining the Fair Food Program.

And today, we’re excited to add even more fantastic artists to the growing roster of performers and speakers for the May 1st concert:  Comedian and actor Amy Schumer; Mare Advertencia Lirika, one of the first Zapoteca hip hop artists out of Oaxaca; and Los Altepee, a Son Jarocho group that has long accompanied the CIW’s Campaign for Fair Food.

Now that you’ve got the concert on your calendar, make sure to invite your friends!  Spread the word on social media!

Amy Schumer has been a friend of the Campaign for Fair Food for years, as both a stalwart ally in the movement to end sexual violence in the fields and an outspoken critic of Wendy’s stubborn refusal to join the Fair Food Program.  From featuring the CIW’s Lupe Gonzalo on her podcast and calling on her fans to boycott Wendy’s on Instagram, to joining farmworkers and their families in the streets of New York for Wendy’s actions and directing donations based on her pandemic-era cooking show with her beau Chris Fischer to the Fair Food Program, Amy has walked the walk of true solidarity with the women and men who harvest our food.  In November 2019, just months before COVID-19 locked the country in its grip, Amy joined the CIW on the streets of New York to lend her support to farmworkers and their families in the Wendy’s Boycott:

This May 1st, from 6:00-8:00 pm on Facebook Live, we look forward to joining Amy, Tom, Olmeca and Los Altepee in action once again — and to getting together for the very first time with new friend Mare Advertencia Lirika!  Check out this video of her human rights anthem “Se Busca” — in support of families searching for their disappeared sons, daughters, husbands and wives in Mexico — for a taste of what’s to come this May Day!

Make sure to put the May 1st concert on your calendar TODAY, and share the details with your friends!
