For a slightly different cut on last weekend’s inspirational Farmworker Freedom March, check out the video above, featuring photos of CIW’s women’s group members and young people from Immokalee.
The video is set to a rendition of the anti-slavery hymn “Amazing Grace” sung by the incomparable Mahalia Jackson. Now, for people of a certain age, Mahalia Jackson needs no introduction. - “Slavery still a prominent practice in U.S.,” Rice University Thresher, 4/23/10 “Immokalee Freedom March Challenges Publix to Do the Right Thing,” AFL-CIO blog, 4/23/10
- “Students push to end modern-day slavery,” Duquesne Duke, 4/22/10
From the Duquesne Duke article:

While working with outside corporations such as Aramark, the University ‘tries to be sensitive to the causes of justice in all relationships with vendors,’ said the Rev. James McCloskey, vice president of Mission and Identity. McCloskey said the University takes into consideration the type of worker relationships outside corporations are involved in. ‘We become increasingly aware, I believe, of our involvement in unjust systems over time,’ McCloskey said. ‘As we become aware, we attempt to change them.'” read more |
