City of Brotherly Love shows much love…

… for the Tour crew and the Campaign for Fair Food!

The Trader Joe’s Northeast Tour continued its swing through the great cities of the Northeast, stopping in Philadelphia on Thursday for a daily double of Fair Food action — a protest at a local Giant supermarket (above, northeast-based chains Giant and Stop & Shop are owned by Dutch supermarket colossus Ahold, whom readers of this site might remember from the “Do the Right Thing Tour” earlier this year…) followed by a spirited picket outside a downtown Trader Joe’s.

And check out this story on the Trader Joe’s action, from the local news and political blog Philly Now, entitled “Immigrant Workers Protest Low Wages at Trader Joe’s” (8/5/11). The story begins:

“Chris Hershberger-Esh of West Philly used to shop at Trader Joe’s—that was until he heard about the company’s refusal to sign an agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, he says. Hershberger-Esh and other protesters were outside the grocery store at 2121 Market St. yesterday to notify customers of the low wages paid to tomato pickers in Florida…” read more

It ends:

“… But, until Trader Joe’s makes the agreement, former customer Hershberger-Esh says he’ll be going elsewhere for his food. There are farmers’ markets, he says, and there’s always Whole Foods.” read more
